BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Arlington Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible hinge and roller replacement parts across Arlington, and most swaps run $225 to $480 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing one hinge or the full set. We keep the common BFT hinge pins, bushings, and roller assemblies on the truck, so a lot of these jobs are done same day. What usually tips an owner off is a gate that starts dragging, squealing, or leaning just enough that the latch no longer lines up, and by then the part has been wearing for months without anybody noticing.

BFT builds a lot of their gate systems around specific hinge geometry, and when a roller flattens or a hinge pin galls, the gate starts fighting the opener. That’s when motors burn out early, brackets crack, and you get a cascade of problems that started with a $40 part nobody replaced. Hal Gatewood has been fixing gates around Arlington since 2001, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every customer: the part that fails first is always the one that was never greased. We fix those properly and we don’t leave you with a new roller on a hinge post that’s already sagging.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has used a few different hinge and roller setups over the years, and the part that fits depends on the series and the gate weight. The Deimos and Sub series swing gate operators pair with specific hinge assemblies sized for the leaf, while the Rigel and Phobos lines often run on carriage and track systems that use nylon or steel rollers with different axle dimensions. The compatibility gotcha we see in Arlington is this: a roller from an older BFT slide gate will physically fit into the carriage on a newer model, but the bearing spacer is off by a couple millimeters, and the gate starts binding within six months. The part number on the motor housing does not always tell you the hinge spec, especially if the gate itself was built by a local fab shop, which a lot of Arlington gates were.

We identify the right part three ways before we touch anything: measure the hinge pin diameter and leaf offset, check the roller OD and axle length, and match that against the series and the gate’s actual weight, not its listed weight. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, but we work with their OEM hinge and roller components and we also use quality aftermarket equivalents when they match or exceed the factory spec. On a BFT gate that carries a heavy decorative panel, we will almost always recommend the OEM or an upgraded bearing roller rather than a cheap nylon wheel. The cheap one is half the price and a third of the lifespan, especially in Texas.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate drags or scrapes at one end. A flattened roller drops the gate a quarter inch, and suddenly the leading edge is kissing the driveway or the track. That’s the roller telling you it’s done.
  • Loud squeal or grind during travel. BFT rollers use sealed bearings on most models, and once the seal fails, Texas dust gets in and the bearing grinds itself down. Grease won’t fix it, only a new roller.
  • Gate leans toward the hinge side or sags at the free end. A worn hinge pin lets the leaf drop and shift, which is why the latch stops lining up. You can adjust the opener all day, but the hinge is the problem.
  • Opener trips or reverses mid-cycle. BFT controls sense resistance, and when a hinge or roller adds drag, the board reads it as an obstruction and stops. Owners sometimes replace the control board when the real fix was a $30 hinge bushing.
  • Visible flat spots or cracks in the roller. After five or six Arlington summers, nylon rollers harden and crack. If you can see a flat spot with the gate in place, the roller is shot and the opener is working harder than it should.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here in Arlington, BFT hinge and roller replacement typically lands between $225 and $480 installed, depending on how many parts are worn and whether the gate is on a track or a post. A single roller swap on a slide gate runs at the lower end. A full hinge set with pins and bushings on a heavy swing gate runs at the upper end, especially if we are also correcting alignment so the gate doesn’t wear the new parts the same way it wore the old ones.

That price includes the part, the labor, greasing everything that should have been greased, and a 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. We quote the price before any work starts and you sign off on it, so there’s no mystery invoice at the end. If a customer has a written estimate from another company, we will give a free second opinion on it, since we have found some genuinely creative quotes on Arlington gates over the years.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things without touching a tool: look for flat spots on the rollers, see if the gate leans when it’s halfway open, and listen for that grind. What you should not do is unbolt a BFT hinge on a swing gate by yourself, especially if it’s a heavy one. The gate leaf is carrying hundreds of pounds and once the hinge is loose, it can shift fast and pin a hand or worse. We have also seen owners install a new roller in a carriage that was cracked, and the whole assembly let go the next week. That’s the kind of thing you catch when you have done a few hundred of these.

If the gate is dragging, grinding, or not closing right, call us at (817) 241-4067 and describe what it’s doing. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a hinge, a roller, or the opener fighting a bad part. If it’s something you can fix with grease, we’ll tell you that too. Just give me a call, I’ll pick up.
