Elite Access Control Installation: The Arlington Owner’s Guide

If your Elite access control system has a failed keypad, dead reader, or a control board that won’t respond, we stock the replacement parts on the truck and can usually have it installed the same day in Arlington. Most Elite access control installation work here runs between $285 and $640, depending on whether we’re swapping a single component or replacing the whole entry system. The way most people find out is simple: they punch in the code, or wave the card, and nothing happens. Then they spend ten minutes checking batteries and fuses before they finally call us.

We’re Gatewood Fence & Gate, an independent shop here in Arlington. We’re not affiliated with Elite, but we’ve been installing and servicing their access control equipment since the early 2000s. Hal Gatewood still answers the phone himself half the time, and he’s been working on gates around Arlington since 2001.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite makes a few different access control lines, and the compatibility rules matter more than most people expect. The SL-3000 and SL-3000-X slide gate operators use a different control board than the RSW and SW series swing operators. The keypads look nearly identical from a distance, but the wiring harness is not interchangeable across all models. We’ve seen plenty of people order a part online based on a photo, then call us when it won’t plug in.

If you can read the model plate on the operator box, that’s the fastest way to confirm what you’ve got. The tag usually sits inside the cover, near the transformer or the main board. Look for a part number that starts with “SL” for slide gates, “SW” for swing gates, or “PAM” for some of the older accessory modules. Aftermarket replacements for Elite parts are widely available, but we’ve had better luck with OEM boards and readers. The aftermarket keypads sometimes fail within a year when they sit in direct sun on a west-facing Arlington driveway. The OEM membrane on the Elite AKE-1 keypad, for example, holds up noticeably longer. When we replace a part, we stand behind it for 90 days regardless of whether it’s OEM or aftermarket, but we’ll tell you straight which one we’d put on our own gate.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad lights up but won’t trigger the gate. This is usually the relay on the control board failing, not the keypad itself. If you hear a soft click but no motor movement, that’s the board, not the wiring.
  • You have to punch the code in twice or three times before it takes. On Elite keypads, the membrane contacts wear out unevenly after about five to seven years of Arlington sun exposure. One digit stops registering consistently, and you’re suddenly re-entering the code like it’s a lottery ticket.
  • The gate opens but won’t close, or vice versa. This often points to a limit switch issue on the operator combined with a control board that’s sending inconsistent signals. The access control part is reading your card fine, but the operator downstream is ignoring the command.
  • The card reader works for one family member but not another. Before you blame the credentials, we see installers who wired the reader into a terminal strip that’s loose on one side. The card is fine. The connection isn’t.
  • The system goes dead after rain. Arlington gets its share of thunderstorms, and moisture inside a non-sealed control box will take out a board faster than age. If your box sits on the north side of a post or near a sprinkler head, that’s where we start looking.

Any one of these can be the whole problem or just the first symptom. When Hal shows up, he starts at the access control device and works backward to the operator, so you’re not paying for a new board when a bad wire nut caused the failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed access control replacement for Elite systems in Arlington typically ranges from $285 for a single keypad or reader swap to $640 for a full board replacement with a new keypad and radio receiver. The range comes from whether we’re reusing your existing wiring, whether the operator needs any retuning, and whether the part is current production or something we have to pull from an older Elite service kit.

Every quote is broken down into parts and labor, and the price we give you before work starts is the price you pay. We don’t quote on the phone and then “discover” more charges in the driveway. The installation includes mounting, wiring, programming your entry codes or credentials, testing the full cycle, and making sure the auto-close and safety sensors are working with the new part. The job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, on the invoice. If it’s not right, one call brings Hal back.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few checks before you call. Confirm the breaker for the operator hasn’t tripped. Check that the keypad or reader has power (most Elite units have a small LED). Inspect the wiring at the keypad for anything obviously chewed or faded. But after that, I’d stop. These systems run on low-voltage DC, so they won’t throw you across the yard, but getting into the control board without a multimeter and the right wiring diagram can turn a $285 keypad swap into a $540 board replacement. We have seen homeowners cross wires and fry a board doing what looked like a simple switch from a YouTube video.

If the gate is a slide or swing operator that moves a heavy panel, the forces involved are genuinely dangerous. Wrong wiring, bypassed safety edges, or a miswired stop circuit can put a two-hundred-pound gate in motion when it shouldn’t. That’s the part where you want someone who does this daily. Call us at (817) 241-4067 and we’ll come take a look. You’ll get a straight answer and a written price before anything gets touched.
