Viking Welding & Fabrication: The Arlington Owner’s Guide

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking gates use a few different steel profiles depending on the line. The older residential swing gates from the Viking R series are typically 2-inch square tube with 1/2-inch pickets. The heavier custom driveway gates, including the ones Viking sells for estate properties, run 2-by-2 or 2-by-3 structural tube with wall thickness anywhere from 14 to 11 gauge. The trick with Viking is that the hinge brackets are often welded directly to the frame, not bolted. So when a hinge fails, you are not replacing a bracket, you are cutting off the old one and welding a new one on.

Identifying your Viking part is straightforward. Look for the stamped model plate on the frame, usually low on the hinge side or inside the top rail. If that plate is gone (it happens), measure the tube size and the wall thickness with a caliper. And be honest about whether you want OEM Viking replacement components or a quality aftermarket equivalent. For structural steel like gate frames and posts, aftermarket is functionally identical and often half the cost. For Viking operator-specific brackets and motor mounts, we tend to use OEM because the tolerances matter.

Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Hairline cracks at hinge welds. Stress concentrates where the hinge meets the frame. If you see a crack forming there, it will keep tearing until the gate drops. We see this most often on heavier gates where the post has settled and put the hinge under constant load.
• Gate dragging on the latch side. The panel has sagged, almost always because the hinge side weld or the post itself has moved. Patching the ground or adjusting the latch won’t fix the underlying problem.
• Rust bubbles under the paint. Water got into the tube through a pinhole or a worn weld. Here in Arlington, the freeze-thaw cycle pushes moisture through gaps, and once rust starts inside the tube, it eats outward.
• Rattling or shaking in the wind. A Viking gate that shudders usually has a broken internal weld or a loose frame connection. You can hear it before you can see it, especially on windy days.
• Motor straining or tripping the breaker. If the gate frame is warped or a hinge is failing, the operator motors have to work against the resistance. The opener will burn out long before the steel gives way.

DIY or Call Us?

The honest answer: welding is not a DIY job. A gate with a torn weld can be under several hundred pounds of tension, and when it lets go, it goes fast. If you want to check anything yourself, look for the cracks and measure your tube size so you can describe the gate accurately when you call. But do not try to winch a heavy Viking gate back into place and do not hit it with a MIG if you do not weld for a living. We have straightened out too many DIY weld jobs on Viking gates around Arlington where somebody burned a bead on without cleaning the joint first, and the crack came right back.

How long do Viking gates last in Arlington?

We do not stock Viking-specific hinge brackets and motor mounts on every truck, because Viking changes their part numbers often and the model line is too varied to carry every variation. What we do stock is structural steel, hinge plates, and the consumables we need for most weld repairs.
